This combination of contemporary celebrity with deep culturalist associations makes the Third World or postcolonial writer vastly overinflated as representative of his or her putative reality. Postcolonial studies only suffers by this reification of the Western craze for otherness. These difficulties have given us great insights into producing this book. While we too have doubts about the dangers of exceptionalism and celebrity, the continuation of neocolonialism and the postmodern fetishization of otherness, we find it rewarding to call attention to both the efflorescence of work calling itself postcolonial and the institutional rise of postcolonial studies within the US, and to place those events within a global context.
Imperialism, colonialism, and postcolonialism are, in variant but broadly overlapping ways, things done to, said of, opposed, or embraced by nations. In relation to both imperialism and colonialism, the nation becomes an object or a projected space of emancipation – although, as I shall discuss below, as part of ultimately divergent emancipatory projects. And it is in relation to this nation as a “liberated territory,” real or imagined, that the mimetic, narrative, obliquely ideological operations of literature and culture can now be fairly rigorously analyzed and classified.

Some readers will be disappointed to find that certain locations are not covered, or are covered in ways they do not agree with. Nonetheless, as scholars located in the US, and drawing from contributors whose experience is largely US-bound, we felt compelled to chart the dimensions of this field within our local institutions.
